The Missouri Drone Journalism Program has an impressive track record: 450 sorties since December; their drones have spent more than 38 hours in the air; they had 32 different student pilots fly the drones for more than 38 miles.

It’s fair to say Judd Slivka, Reynolds Journalism Institute’s first director of aerial journalism, knows what he’s talking about when sharing his five lessons about the drone part of drone journalism.

“Skills degrade over time and so does the feel for the drone,” writes Slivka. “Professional drone operators will tell you that an hour a day of practice — indoors or outdoors — is the antidote for that. I’m not sure that journalists who use the drone as part of a reporting toolbox can spare that hour. But you can spare 15 minutes. “
