One of the main reasons why readers are critical of the way in which news organisations approach their coverage is because they do not feel represented in conversations that concern the population at large, such as those around elections or immigration.
How can news outlets do better in making their stories inclusive and ensure they feature a wide variety of voices and perspectives? In this post on IJNet, freelance journalist Cristiana Bedei outlines seven resources journalists can use as a starting point to "redress any unintended bias".
Among the resources she recommends are: SheSource, a database of women experts that connects journalists with sources from a variety of industries; TONL and Representation Matters, platforms that specialise in stock images featuring people of colour and models of various body sizes; and GLAAD'S Media Reference Guide, which offers basic tips and a glossary of offensive terms to avoid when covering LGBTQ issues.
