Getting fair pay as a female journalist can be difficult, as Brooke Masters, opinion and analysis editor for Financial Times, explained during Women In Journalism’s event about 'taking on a career challenge' in financial news.
However, Masters highlighted now would be a good time for women to apply for a senior role and push for higher pay, whether they work in financial journalism or not, as the pushback against the gender pay gap gathers more momentum and coverage.
Joining Masters on the panel were four other women leading the way in financial journalism, from The Sunday Times, The Observer, Hearst, Good Housekeeping, as well as from academia.
The event was aimed at finance reporters, being the third annual meeting for women in financial journalism, but the panel shared some helpful general advice for all women in the media, such as: "consider your next career move when you write stories for your current job", and "be conscious of your market value when you freelance".
