Tweetdeck can be a journalist's best friend for finding your next story or what people are talking about.

But if you are new to journalism, all the columns and lists can be overwhelming. To help get you started on the platform, Ekta Khanchandani, MA interactive journalism student at City, University of London, provides a guide for student journalists on Interhacktives.

The first essential ingredient is columns. Fill your page with @ mentions, specific profiles and hashtags that are relevant to your beat, and watch as updates filter through in real-time.

"If you’re in a situation where you are trying to research multiple things at once, I find TweetDeck extremely useful as it helps me read through multiple sources at once," she writes.
